Portugal has the best value Old World wine, why pay more during Covid-19 unprecedented times?

Updated: Jun 30

Vivino users has rated millions of wines, giving us an immense amount of data to spot the good wines from the bad. You may be wondering how to best use the Vivino Rating System, and here is some context that may help:

  • The average Vivino rated wine is 3.6 stars

  • A 4.0 Vivino rated wine is equivalent to a 90 point expert rating*

  • A 4.0 Vivino rated wine is better than 85 percent of the wines on the planet

  • A 4.5 Vivino rated wine is better than 99 percent of the wines on the planet

With Vivino Ratings in hand, the next question we often hear is: how much should I be paying for a good bottle of wine? An average bottle of wine? And how about an extraordinary bottle of wine?

From analyzing data from world’s largest online wine marketplace Vivino, we aggregate prices from tens of thousands of online wine merchants, and have collected millions of prices for millions of different wines. That means we know how to spot a good deal from a bad deal.

An average bottle of red wine (3.6 rating) costs $15.66 USD while a very good bottle of wine (4.0 rating) costs $32.48 USD, on average. And even better wines become exponentially more expensive as you can see in the chart below.

France Average (4.0 Rating) $41.56 USD

Italy Average (4.0 Rating) $38.33 USD

Spain Average (4.0 Rating) $28.13 USD

Portugal Average (4.0 Rating) $24.22 USD

While quality white wines tend to be a little less expensive, they also follow the same trend of getting exponentially more expensive the higher the rating. For white wine, an average bottle of wine (3.6 rating) costs $14.41 USD while a very good bottle of costs (4.0 rating) $24.94 USD on average and in Portugal Average cost for a (4.0 rating) is 17.50 USD

Keep in mind that while the above are averages for all red and white wines, some styles of wine are more expensive than other styles, even if quality is the same. For example, there is so much market demand for Champagne, that similarly rated California Sparkling wines are much more affordable.

4.0 Champagne (France) costs on average $50.46 USD,

4.0 California Sparkling costs on average $31.73 USD

4.0 Portuguese just $22.00 USD.
