SERIES | SAMARRINHO | WHITE | 2018 | DOC DOURO
The Series line, represents our passion for innovation and experimentation in the search for new wines and diverse styles of vinifictaion. This effort reflects the backstage work developed by our winemaking and viticulture team, beginning in 2001, with the recovery and replantation of more than 30 indigenous grape varieties (some close to extinction). In the last 20 years, examples of grape varietals such as Samarrinho, Cornifesto ou Malvasia Preta, were planted at our Quintas, in single blocks with no less than 1ha, allowing enough quantity for individual vinifications with the purpose of bottling as experimental singles varietal wines. Altough not every Vintage provides characterful wines, yet, since the first Series wine with the grape Rufete from the 2010 harvest, we’ve bottled many surprisingly unique wines. These wines will always be rehersals where Real Companhia Velha seeks to explore new approaches and techniques that can be applied to our classic range.
Samarrinho is one of the greatest examples of the continuous inovation and experimentation projects ocurring at Real Companhia Velha, with the 2013 Vintage presenting the World with it’s first ever Samarrinho single-varietal. Our viticulture team led a profound study if this grape to discover its origins and character, and we found its constant presence within Douro’s Oldest Vines, which traditionally are composed of a Field Blend. Amongst many other varieties, we have selected Samarrinho for experimentation for its attractive bundle, which revealed nobility and enologic potential.

Paired beautifully with soft curry, grilled fish and creamy chesses.
The Year of 2018:
The year 2018 revealed to be an unusual campaign on a climatic point of view, and in comparisson to the last 5 years. Blossoming was late, as the vines evolved well in terms of vegetative development due to the availabilty of water that allowed the recovery of plant vigor in the vineyard after suffering from hydric stress in 2017. Climatic conditions throughout spring affected the sanitary management of the vines, as mildium developed strongly due to high humidity. The harvest began on the first weeks of September. The occorence of phytosanitary pressure due to excessive heat and the dehydration of some parcels, both had significant impact on production, with a decrease of 7% in total production in relation to the previous year, and 14% when compared to the last 5 years. Nevertheless, this year’s harvest provided wines of superb quality, with good levels of acidity and phenolic composts.
