Intro: Château d'Yquem  is a Premier Cru Supérieur (Fr: "Superior First Growth") wine from the Sauternes, Gironde region in the southern part of the Bordeaux vineyards known as Graves. In the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855, Château d'Yquem was the only Sauternes given this rating, indicating its perceived superiority and higher prices over all other wines of its type. Yquem's success stems largely from the site's susceptibility to attack by "noble rot"

Winery: Château d'Yquem

Region: Bordeaux | Sauternes(Left Bank)

Grapes: Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc

Aging: French Oak Barrels

Tasting Notes: Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 95 Points: “Served from an ex-chateau bottle. The 1995 Chateau d’Yquem is moving into its secondary aroma phase. A deep golden color, it has a dense and almost Barsac-like bouquet with tangerine, apricot, acacia and melted candle wax. It displays good intensity, unfolding beautifully in the glass. The palate has a strident opening, with a slight bitter edge that lends this Yquem great tension. One can discern layers of marmalade infused with honey fruit, with a powerful, spicy finish that lingers long in the mouth. This is drinking perfectly now, but will surely age with style over many years.” (NM) June 2014 Robert Parker Comments: "There is no other wine in the world like it, and there is no other luxury wine that can possibly justify its price as much as Yquem. The remarkable amount of painstaking labor necessary to produce the nectar known as Yquem is almost impossible to comprehend." Upon release: "Yquem can hardly contain their enthusiasm for the 1995 vintage. This offers a clear, brilliant golden-yellow color with a bouquet that is still a bit closed up at the moment. However, there are hints of honey, raisins, and jam due to the 1995 vintage's superb concentration. The bouquet also reveals subtle aromas of quince, fig, and hazelnut. Shows a great deal of character on the palate - round and full-bodied, with considerable strength. The richness is balanced by good acidity. Orange and mandarin flavors fill the mouth, and the finish is much longer than typical of Yquem. This vintage will easily survive the first century of the new millennium, and will no doubt provide us with much pleasure in future decades." (RP)
